Sgt. Varoek

Sgt. Varoek is a 7 1/2 year old Brown and Black German Shepherd male weighing 95 pounds and started with the department in January 2002.  Varoek was born in Czechoslovakia and is SCPK9 Certified in Obedience, Explosive Detection, Tracking, Patrol Work, Building Searches and Article Searches.

Sgt. Varoek takes pride in his tracking and article searches.  Since being placed in service Varoek is credited with apprehending over 50 criminals.

In May 2006, Varoek placed 2nd in Patrol, 3rd in Explosive Detection and 3rd in Obedience at the Low Country Top Dog Competition.  

Varoek likes his job and enjoys tracking the most.  While tracking Varoek likes to take time to smell the flowers and lead his handler through any water hazard he can locate, sometimes frying electronic equipment.

Pfc. Hille and K9 Varoek were recognized as N. Charleston's Exchange Club's Officer of the Year.  In January, Officer Hille and Varoek responded to assist officers who were chasing a robbery suspect.  The suspect fled into the woods and after tracking the suspect for almost 3 hours, Varoek apprehended the suspect and he was taken into custody.  Officer Hille was also recognized in assisting in saving the life of a person who was serious injured in a shooting.  

While off duty Varoek plays with his friend Moose, a chocolate lab.  Together they chase the cats, Allie and Franklin.  Varoek likes swimming and trips to the beach as well
